Comparison

CueSetter vs. Timecode Creator, Moving Light Assistant and Export CueList for gma3

They solve different problems. Timecode Creator and Export CueList for gma3 build timecoded grandMA sequences from markers in Reaper, MIDI or CSV files. Timecode Creator (GMA Toolbox)

Timecode Creator is one of the tools in GMA Toolbox by Matthias Schöffmann. Its page describes it as turning “Reaper project files or CSV marker files into timecoded sequences for grandMA consoles”: every marker becomes a cue at the marker’s time, with fade times, follow-cues and button triggers from subtracks. The result is saved as a macro and timecode for the console, or sent straight to it.

GMA Toolbox also has a Macro Generator that builds grandMA macros from a table, using templates you write yourself. It is a general tool: you decide which commands each row becomes.

03

Moving Light Assistant

Moving Light Assistant by Andrew Voller Lighting Design is documentation software: rig data, gobo and colour wheel loads, presets and cue lists with photos and notes, imported from the console. Its site lists grandMA2 among the consoles it imports from, describes grandMA3 support in version 1.4.1 as basic and improved, and says full grandMA3 support is planned for the next major release. Licences are sold through City Theatrical.

04

Export CueList for gma3

Export CueList for gma3 by OF COURSE (Maciej Hofstede) is a Mac app on the App Store. It exports cue lists from MIDI files, CSV files or Reaper projects to grandMA3 over an OSC connection, including sequence and executor numbers, trigger times and fades. Its description is written for operators who otherwise fill in every Trig Time by hand.

When CueSetter fits better

  • The starting point is the run sheet from production – a PDF, a Word document or an Excel file – not markers in an audio project.
  • You want one named cue per item, numbered like the run sheet, with set lists as sub-cues, and you will program the looks yourself.
  • You can’t or won’t install software: it runs in the browser on Windows, Mac or Linux, and the file is never uploaded.
  • You work on grandMA3. CueSetter makes grandMA3 macros, not grandMA2.

See it with your own file in CueSetter, or read how it handles PDF, Word and Excel run sheets.

06

When another tool fits better

  • The show runs on timecode and the cues are marked in Reaper or a DAW: Timecode Creator or Export CueList for gma3 are built for that. CueSetter makes no timecode, trigger times or fades.
  • You need paperwork for the rig and the programming: Moving Light Assistant.
  • You want macros for patch, presets or other jobs from your own command templates: GMA Toolbox’s Macro Generator.
